A Florida high school senior has been named one of the nation's top students for the second year in a row, thanks to a scholarship fund set up by the Greater Hernando Chamber of Commerce.
Joseph Marrone of Hernando High School was one of 45 students to receive a scholarship of at least $500 from the chamber's Education Training Association this year, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Marrone, who plans to attend the University of South Florida next year, received the top honor in the career and technical categories, as well as the top honor in the arts.
The chamber's executive director tells the Hernando Herald-Tribune that the scholarship fund was started 50 years ago as a way to honor high school students who had performed well in extracurricular activities and in community service.
"It's a way for us to recognize their academic achievement, their community service, and their leadership," he says.
"It's also a way for them to be recognized for what they've done in their four years of high school."
