"Education levels the playing field," says Kansas City Royals owner John Sherman.
"This is what I think drives us, and I think about it a lotwhere you end up should not be dictated by where you start."
That's one of the reasons Sherman and his wife, Marny, have been so committed to education in Kansas City, Mo., since becoming the MLB team's owners in November, the Kansas City Star reports.
"We can't be everything for everybody, but we've tried to do what we can in that sphere, and particularly as it impacts the Kansas City community," John Sherman says.
The Shermans founded the Sherman Family Foundation in 2006, and since then, they've given millions to such causes as Operation Breakthrough, which provides education, health care, and other services to children in poverty.
"Education is the greatest equalizer of people, so what we're hoping to do with our foundation is help equalize all kinds of people," Marny Sherman tells the Star.
"We can't be everything for everybody, but we've tried to do what we can in that sphere, and particularly as it impacts the Kansas City community."
