If you've got a bad night's sleep and want your creativity to kick into high gear, you're not alone.
So say researchers in China, who report in the journal BMC Psychology that insomnia has a "direct impact on the creativity of adolescents."
To test this, they surveyed 302 teens in China about their creativity, cognition, and insomnia levels, then asked them to rate their creativity and imagination on a scale from 1 to 10.
They found a correlation between daytime disturbances and creativity, but not between nighttime disturbances and creativity.
"Daytime disturbances were found to have a positive correlation with overall creativity and imagination, whereas no significant direct effect was found between nighttime disturbances and creativity," the researchers write.
"Further analysis revealed that insomnia, specifically daytime disturbances, might influence creativity by affecting the individual's need for cognition," the researchers say, but no similar indirect effects were found between nighttime disturbances and creativity.
Insomnia has been linked to a range of mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, as well as lower creativity levels, reports the New York Times.
