Prek for All a Good Way to Disrupt the Preschool-To-Prison Pipeline

Gretchen Whitmer is making good on her promise to make preschool available to all 4-year-olds by expanding the state's PreK for All program.

She signed an executive order Thursday making the program available to all 4-year-olds by 2024, the Detroit Free Press reports.

It's part of a larger push by Whitmer to make preschool available to all kids in the state, which has some of the highest rates of poverty in the nation.

She says the program will help kids who might not otherwise have access to early education get a good start on life and reduce the likelihood that they'll end up in prison or worse, the Detroit News reports.

"Preschool is a proactive approach to teaching basic life skills and has a positive impact on children's social, cognitive, and emotional development," says Jessica White-Hatinger, director of operations at a Christian Early Learning & Nature Preschool in Ada, Mich.

She tells the Free Press that the earlier kids learn those life lessons, the better they'll be able to handle the challenges that come with later life.
