A Spanish teacher in New Hampshire has been named the state's World Languages Teacher of Excellence.
Michael Clauss, a teacher at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, has been known as "Profe Clauss" by his students and even has his own Instagram page, the New Hampshire Union Leader reports.
But it's his creation of the "Mayoman'a de Mayo" memein which students watch mayonnaise commercials and then vote for their favoritethat has earned him the award.
"With the help of his CBNA world language colleagues Jennifer Sommerer and Molly Chiarantona, Clauss created a Google site that allowed students studying the Spanish language to view twenty-four mayonnaise commercials from around the Spanish-speaking world, and vote for their favorites in 'March Madness' style," the New Hampshire Association of World Language Teachers writes on its website.
More than 60,000 students worldwide took part in the "Mayoman'a de Mayo" craze last spring, according to the Union Leader.
Clauss created the meme with the help of two fellow teachers and Google, and he plans to share it with other world languages teachers.
