When it comes to greenhouse gas emissions, the US, UK, Canada, and Australia are among the highest in the world, according to a 2016 report from the Union of Concerned Scientists.
And that's not counting the energy used to run hospitals, pharmacies, and diagnostic machines, as well as the waste generated by all that medical care.
"The world has seen the invention, discovery, and application of many innovative healthcare advancements that are helping to reduce its economic, environmental, and carbon footprint," Dr.zad Moopen, founder and chairman of Aster DM Healthcare, writes in an op-ed for the Indian Express.
To that end, Moopen is calling for "sustainable innovations in healthcare" to "change the paradigm."
Among Moopen's ideas: artificial intelligence, machine learning, remote patient consultation, 3D printing, gene-editing technology, and using renewable energy like wind and solar to power hospitals.
The Times of India reports Moopen also wants hospitals to focus more on preventive care and less on treatment of diseases.
"We cannot afford to have the saviors turn to tormentors," he writes.
"Learning to scale the healthcare model to accommodate and fit humanity while decreasing wastage and emission is the only way forward."
