The World Economic Forum's annual meeting is under way in Davos, Switzerland, and climate change is expected to be a major topic.
The Guardian reports that the WEF's Global Risks report released last week found that climate change is one of the biggest risks the world will face over the next decade.
The report found that half of the most severe threats over the next decade will be environmental issues, including extreme weather events, changes to Earth's systems, biodiversity loss, and a shortage of natural resources.
Ahead of the meeting, hundreds of climate activists blocked the road to the forum's venue on Sunday, causing a traffic jam, the Hill reports.
Activists are calling for a global tax on assets to finance climate protection.
“While war, fascism, injustice, and the climate crisis threaten humanity, the richest and most powerful are patting each other on the back behind closed doors,” said Nicola Siegrist, president of Sweden's Social Democratic Party, per the Hill.
“The people who are mostly fueling the destruction of the planet are still listening to the people who are mostly fueling the destruction of the planet at Davos rather than the people on the front lines of the climate emergency.”
