So says Amanda Cordano, executive director of Ms. President US, a program in Ridgefield, Conn., that trains girls in fourth through eighth grade and their high school mentors to run for public office, reports the Ridgefield Press.
Thanks to a grant from Fairfield County's Community Foundation, the program will now be open to girls in all of Fairfield County.
The idea behind the program is to give girls the "courage and confidence" to take on leadership roles in their communities, regardless of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability, Cordano says in a press release.
The girls participate in eight workshops, one field trip to the state capitol, and the culminating event: a campaign and election.
"These sessions focus on civic engagement and education, and leadership and empowerment skills," Cordano says.
