When Samuel Arsht and his wife, Lois, decided to create the Samuel Arsht Foundation in 2005, they didn't set out to create the world's biggest charity.

Instead, they set out to "preserve, support, protect, and defend the best interests of a civil society," according to the foundation's website.

Since then, the Arshts have given $12 million to more than 100 causes, the New York Times reports.

The latest round of grants, announced Tuesday, will fund programs "that strengthen communities, families, early learning providers, and others collaborate to prepare families with children (birth through age 8) to get ready for school and life," according to the Arshts' website.

Among the recipients: a Spanish-language program for babies and their parents in Delaware, an after-school program for kids in low-income communities in Maryland, and an art program for at-risk youth in Delaware, the News Journal reports.
