"Research shows that children who have their own school supplies are more creative, have better attitudes toward learning, and ultimately achieve higher grades."
So reads a press release from the Houston Independent School District, which is holding a back-to-school supply drive in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
The district estimates that parents will spend more than $200 on school supplies for their elementary, middle, and high school students this year, per the Houston Chronicle.
"Because this sum is ever-increasing, it is more important than ever that HISD works together with community members to organize these drives so every student has the opportunity to start the school year prepared for success," the release reads.
The district is accepting donations of new and gently used school supplies at its Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center through Aug.
