The Milwaukee City Plan Commission gave the green light Monday to a four-story, $60 million arts and tech complex that will replace a pair of vacant buildings in the city's Bronzeville neighborhood, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

The Bronzeville Creative Arts & Tech Hub will include 60 apartments, 29,000 square feet of commercial space, and a two-story black box theater with a capacity of up to 175 people.

"We are focusing on supporting entrepreneurs and arts organizations," developer Michael Adetoro of FIT Investment Group told the commission.

"Milwaukee is one of the biggest music hubs in the country, but you look on stage and it's not a lot of local talent," Adetoro said.

"Some of the entrepreneurs could end up both living and working in the building."

The apartments will be leased to low-income people through the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation's low-income housing tax credit program.

A two-story live-work apartment will also be fronted by a storefront.

There will be a fitness center, community room, and terrace, as well as 37 parking spaces.

The project will be paid for with a $700,000 environmental cleanup loan and a tax incremental financing district that was approved by the city's redevelopment authority in October, WISN reports.
