The American Heart Association has a new leader for its board of directors in the Western US.
Peggy Maguire, president of the Cambia Health Foundation in Portland, Ore., will lead the group of health care, business, and community leaders in the region that includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, per a press release.
"As the American Heart Association celebrates its 100th birthday and looks to the future, I believe that together, we will redouble our efforts to ensure that every person has an equal opportunity to live their healthiest life possible, now and into the next century," Maguire says in the release.
"I am honored to take on the responsibilities of board chairperson in the Western States as we work toward a world without cardiovascular disease."
A heart attack and stroke are the leading causes of death in the US, killing more than 500,000 people each year, the AP reports.
