Igniting Innovation, Creativity In Africa'S Ecopreneurs

Ghana'sMinkailu Hamidu Yakubu Silinba and his six co-workers at 3N Silinba Waste Utilization GH collect plastics from designated drop-off points and wash, sort, and transform them into nylon yarns by hand.

They're one of 450 youth ecopreneurs from across Africa who participated in the 2023 YouSustain Africa Conference in Accra, which landed them with funds to further their business goals.

"I learned that all the world's economic actors are under pressure to get smarter and turn waste into wealth," the 21-year-old tells Quartz.

"That is a booster for us, to get smarter and turn waste into wealth."

Silinba's plastic repurposing work at a post-conference competition run by Ghana's Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) to support ecopreneurs build capacity.

For his part, another winner, Ernest Mensah, whose team developed insect-based solutions to reduce vulnerability in Ghana's agricultural, livestock, and biotech industries, plans to use the small portion of black soldier fly larvae as feed for pet owners, poultry farmers, and livestock farmers.

Meanwhile, another winner, Isaac Kwabena Danso, whose team developed solutions to reduce agricultural waste into charcoal briquettes, hopes
