How to Accelerate Climate Adaptation in Cities

In the face of climate change, cities around the world are having a hard time raising the money they need to protect themselves from flooding, droughts, and rising temperatures, Fast Company reports.

According to a United Nations report, cities around the world need to raise $5.8 trillion to cope with the effects of climate change by 2030, but funding is limited.

"We need to reinvent infrastructure as a multi-purpose asset that enriches communities year-round," Fast Company quotes an article from architecture and design firm Arcadis.

"Imagine a 'living roof' atop a building, generating clean energy and promoting sustainable water use," the article states.

"When we redefine our relationship with infrastructure in this manner, we not only fortify our cities against climate change but also enhance their livability and resilience every single day of the year."

According to Fast Company, nature-based solutions are the key to climate resilience.

For instance, a city that is vulnerable to flooding may want to build a stormwater park to prevent excess water from entering the system.

In addition to mitigating the effects of climate change, nature-based solutions are good for the environment as well.

Arcadis has been working with cities around the world to find nature-based solutions for their infrastructure.
