"When you look at the challenges that we face in the environment today, many of which have been exacerbated by poor land planning and development, it's an opportunity to improve the world," Jeff Stack tells Fortune.
That's why the real estate billionaire and his wife, Nancy, are donating $5 million to the Urban Land Institutethe world's largest real estate research organizationto help it "continue to play a vital role in shaping sustainable, equitable communities worldwide," per a press release.
The Nancy and Geoffrey Stack Family Foundation is making the donation to the ULI Chair's Fund, which was established in fall 2021 to provide unrestricted funding for ULI's programmatic and operational needs, with the goal of reaching a $50 million endowment.
Stack says he and his wife became interested in philanthropy after their own daughter, Natalie, was born with a rare genetic disease called cystinosis.
"Our interest in health care and finding cures for diseases stems from the fact that our own daughter, Natalie, was born with a very rare genetic disease called cystinosis," Stack says.
