"We are deeply moved by the dedication of our youth in championing sustainability," says the chief sustainability officer for Hawaii's Maui County.

"Let us stand alongside these inspiring young leaders as they drive meaningful change, shaping a world where every voice matters."

On May 22, more than 150 students from Iao Intermediate School in Kahului marched to the Kalana O Maui Building as part of the "Wednesday For Our World Walk" to mark their commitment to global leadership and advocacy, reports Maui News.

They then participated in the County Council Chambers as part of the "Student Voices for Sustainable Development" event, which focused on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Students delivered 18 presentations on topics including clean water, food security, education, gender equality, clean water, renewable energy, economic growth, infrastructure, innovation, sustainable communities, climate action, biodiversity conservation, peace, and justice, and partnerships.

"We are deeply moved by the dedication of our youth in championing sustainability," says Joshua Cooper, chief sustainability officer for the County of Maui.

"Their voices, showcased through discussions on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, illuminate the path towards a more equitable and resilient future for Maui Nui."

A follow-up climate action event is planned next month.
