The winner of Kenya's presidential innovation award has an unusual claim to fame: It's the first one in the country to be bestowed with the title of "king of innovation," the Guardian reports.
William Ruto, the president of Kenya, received the honor Tuesday at State House in Nairobi.
The award is given to young people who have shown an ability to create "impactful solutions for society," according to the country's Ministry of Youth Affairs.
The winner, 23-year-old Gladwell Gladwell, will receive $1 million and a year's worth of mentorship from the president, as well as the opportunity to present his or her idea to a panel of judges at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in November.
The Guardian notes that the award is notable because it's the first to be bestowed with the title of "king of innovation" in the East African country.
The winner of last year's award, 21-year-old Gladwell's idea for a self-driving car, went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
