It's a "rare and risky move" to call out a fellow doctor's work, but that's what plastic surgeons in Utah are doing after allegations of over-treating children with cleft palates, ProPublica reports.
Dr.evan Griner, who opened a practice in 2017 in Salt Lake City, says he was shocked when an orthodontist asked him what age he would do bone grafts, a common procedure for cleft patients.
"There is broad consensus nationwide to time bone grafts to when a patient is getting certain adult teeth, and so Griner, a bit taken aback, replied that of course he does it then," ProPublica quotes Griner as saying.
"Almost immediately Griner encountered it for himself."
Patients soon started showing up at Griner's practice who'd been treated at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, where most children born with cleft lip and palate are treated.
In many cases, Griner says, they'd been advised to have " grueling, and possibly unnecessary, facial surgeries earlier than his profession advised," and in some cases, they'd been performed on patients too young to need the surgery in the first place.
A group of nine doctors, including Griner, filed a complaint
