The UN's Human Rights Council is set to meet this week in Geneva, and one item on the agenda is likely to be a call for an end to plastic pollution, reports the Geneva Environment Network.
The council will hold an informal session on Tuesday to discuss the issue, and a draft resolution is expected to be presented, per a press release.
It would call for the creation of an "international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment," which the UN hopes will be in place by 2024.
"We need to listen to defenders," says Tess McEvoy of the International Service for Human Rights.
"We need to listen to movements.
We need to protect them, and we need to protect the environment."
