Bike Walk Savannah Awarded $46K Grant from State for Events, Safety Campaigns

"I'm stronger and nimbler, now," Magen Peigelbeck says.

"And the comradery of these experiences is great."

The Georgia woman is referring to Bike Walk Savannah, a nonprofit that works to make the streets of Savannah and Chatham County safer for people who prefer to bike or walk rather than drive, the Savannah Morning News reports.

The group has received more than $46,000 in federal grant money for safety education, pedestrian safety materials, local bike trail maps, and bike lights for people in need.

"Many people in Savannah and Chatham County depend on biking and walking for daily transportation," executive director Caila Brown says.

"And many more make the choice to add biking and walking to their mobility options, whether for transportation or recreation."

The group's biggest accomplishment so far is the completion of the Truman Linear Park Trail, a 3.1-mile path for walking, running, biking, and roller skating.

"Because the terrain is uneven, these community rides really help with balance, shifting from pavement to sidewalk, cracks, and different textures," Brown says.

"And the comradery of these experiences is great."
