"When I was still in high school, I couldn't have imagined that I would be where I am today," says Neil Wiborg, a recent Mountlake Terrace High School graduate who received a scholarship from the Foundation for Edmonds School District in Washington state.

"My future was very uncertain at the time, I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to afford college."

Now a software engineer with Boeing in St.

Louis, Wiborg says the foundation's scholarships "are a big part of what allowed me to focus on school rather than money and I am very thankful to be where I am today."

The foundation, founded in 1984, is celebrating 40 years of supporting students, teachers, and families in the Edmonds School District, the Seattle Times reports.

Since its founding, the foundation has given more than $2.5 million in grants to schools and students, including more than $1.3 million in post-secondary scholarships, according to a press release.

"We look forward to building on the framework laid over the past 40 years and continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of students in our district," says Deborah Brandi, the foundation's executive director.
