Bishop, who served in the US Foreign Service in the 1940s and '50s, left instructions for his mother, Elizabeth Bishop, to start the Oliver Bishop Scholarship Fund after his death.
The Washington Post reports the fund, which has given out more than $415,000 since its founding in 1927, was started with a $25,000 donation from his mother.
It's now given out more than $635,000 to students from around the world.
