'The Past 10 Years Have Been an Incredible Journey'

When a gunman opened fire on the University of Texas at El Paso campus on Aug.

3, killing 26 and injuring more than 50, it was the first mass shooting in the West Texas city in more than a decade.

It was also the deadliest in the US since the Gabrielle Giffords shooting in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011.

The El Paso Times reports that in the 10 years since the Paso del Norte Community Foundation was established in the city, it has given more than $125 million to improve education, health, social services, economic development, and quality of life in the region.

The foundation's four priority areas are philanthropy, nonprofit investments, community projects, crisis response, and resilience.

"What was birthed is an institution rooted in leadership, collaboration, integrity, inclusion, and stewardship," the foundation states.

"As a trusted community partner, our four priority areas of philanthropic giving, nonprofit investments, community projects, crisis response, and resilience ensure that we respond to the community's most immediate needs while investing in the future."
