Discovery Days: Arts Faculty Work to Forge Innovation in Arts and Health Care

"It's highly motivating, but also frustrating at the same time, which gives us space in a safe and controlled environment to talk about how to do emotional regulation and express ourselves without getting in trouble."

That's what Florida State University professor Flor del Cielo Hernandez has to say about the art therapy she's been practicing on children with neurodivergent children for the past eight years, NPR reports.

Hernandez's students are typically between the ages of 4 and 12, and the project she's been working on with her husband, director of the school's art therapy program, has been a big hit with both students and teachers.

"I am big into active music making because making music with other people is just joyful," Hernandez says.

The idea for the project came to her while she was working on a grant to study how art therapy can be used to improve children's well-being.

And she's not the only one who's been using art therapy to improve children's well-being: Researchers from across the country have been working together to study how the arts can be used to improve health and well-being, and Florida State University researchers recently met to discuss how they can better promote the inclusion of the arts in holistic health
