David Harper's passion for safety led him to Fairmont State University, where he studied social studies, health and physical education, and secondary education before earning a master's degree in industrial safety and safety education in 1972.
His passion for safety led him to teach at East Fairmont High School and work in industry and higher education, where he dedicated his career to safety, health, and loss control, per a university press release.
He died in 2015 at the age of 69 after a long battle with brain cancer.
Harper's parents encouraged him and his four siblings to pursue advanced degrees, and Fairmont State is one of only 12 institutions in the country where graduates also earn the designation Graduate Safety Practitioner.
His widow, Nancy Valentine Harper, is a Fairmont State alum and a 4-H program leader with the US Department of Agriculture.
The couple has set up two scholarships to support students in music education and occupational safety programs.
