Today is World Population Day, and a new report finds that the world's 80 most vulnerable countries are growing their population twice as fast as the global rate.
That's " aggravating climate impacts and vulnerability," per the report from the NGO Population Institute.
In many of the most vulnerable countries, "rapid population growth is linked to gender inequality, including lack of access to family planning and reproductive health services," per the report.
In the US, "the most climate-vulnerable countries suffer some of the worst gender inequality, undermining their capacity for adaptation and resilience in the short-term, and fueling population growth and climate vulnerability in the long term," says Population Institute President Kathleen Mogelgaard in a press release.
The report also finds that women in the US are at higher risk of gender-based violence after natural disasters and are more likely than women in other countries to be affected by climate change.
"How population trends affect our ability to contend with the climate crisis is an area that tends to get overlooked," Mogelgaard says.
"But our report showcases examples of innovative, impactful, multisectoral efforts that model how the linked challenges of climate change vulnerability, gender equity, and reproductive health and rights can be addressed together," she adds.
