"We're giving local high school students a strong foundation connecting them with mentors, resources, and the support needed to thrive in the workforce," says Ruby Carrasco, program manager of San Jos' Works 2023, a six-week summer work experience program that's been offering "meaningful and practical work related to a career of interest" to youth from low-income and underserved communities in San Jose, Calif.
The San Jose Mercury News reports on the program, which has seen more than 5,000 youth gain "valuable job experience" since it was launched in 2015.
Participants, ages 14 to 18, will work in "high-growth sectors such as Information Technology, Finance, Advanced Manufacturing, Health Care, and Construction," according to a press release.
They'll also receive "critical life skill instruction in core competencies such as job readiness, financial literacy, and time management and supportive services such as transportation and clothing," per the press release.
Approximately 80% of the program's participants come from low-income neighborhoods, per the Mercury News.
