Cuyahoga County in Ohio has decided to open up a new facility for teens accused of minor crimes. This facility will help try and diagnose them with treatable mental illnesses and help them get the help they need, thus hopefully reducing the likelihood of their bad behavior continuing.
The new facility will also stop children with more minor crimes from being sent to a full detention center, where they may meet with and be influenced by teenagers who have committed worse crimes. Interacting with those teens might make the lesser offenders worse than they would be otherwise.
The new system hopes to help reform first time offenders and make their lives better. It is being built with the help of a grant that was given from Ohio's Department of Youth Services.
