Illinois is offering $30 million in grants to communities of color that have been hardest hit by the state's war on drugs, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Gov.

JB Pritzker announced the Restore, Reinvest, and Renewor R3 grants Friday.

"For far too long, Black and Brown communities have been disproportionately harmed by the failed war on drugs," the governor said in a press release.

"By bringing restorative, holistic solutions to the most disinvested communities, we're continuing on our mission to form a more healing-centered Illinois."

According to the Washington Post, 25% of Illinois' Cannabis Regulation and Trust Act tax revenue is going to the R3 program.

The grants will be awarded in five priority areas: civil legal aid, economic development, re-entry from the criminal justice system, violence prevention, and youth development.

"The negative consequences of the failed war on drugs have been felt far more severely by poor and disadvantaged communitiesmostly communities of color," Delrice Adams, executive director of the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, says in the press release.

"The R3 program seeks to repair this and other systemic disparities by ensuring funds are distributed equitably to high-need communities and provide the needed services in areas that have suffered the most harm Read the Entire Article
